Assisted Living Today

Assisted Living can be interpreted in different ways but is defined as a residential living facility where assistance is provided for Activities of Daily Living (ADL). These ADL’s include dressing, feeding, bathing, toileting, and medication assistance. Facilities range from homes converted to personal care homes all the way to large scale, apartment like complexes.

The balance for a resident in assisted living is a transition from home to a setting where there is assistance for those daily activities and also a form of community. The sharing of ones living space with others can be enjoyable and healthy. Interaction is usually limited for elderly who are at home due to lack of transportation or access to friends and loved ones. Also, there is a certain amount of boredom when an individual lives alone.

Goals of assisted living facilities are usually structured to promote healthy living in an environment where the residents are comfortable and have interaction with a variety of people, activities, and events. Typical interest for placement is usually based on a person or their friend or family noticing a need for assistance in any of the above activities or needing some presence for emergencies. The aging of a senior can be a pleasant one if it occurs in stages of transition rather than an immediate one to the nursing home. If possible, the assisted living environment can provide the support necessary without the feeling of a medical facility. Also, the independence of the residents can improve the overall attitude of the senior.

The process to come to an assisted living entails finding the right facility based on the level of services provided, the location of a facility, and amenities. Assisted Living is not only a health decision, but a lifestyle decision as well. By entering a facility, the period of healthy life can be extended before health issues arise leading to higher level of care.
